What we do
As the local Council for Voluntary Service or CVS, we provide information, advice, training, and support to charities and community groups, sharing our expertise, building partnerships, promoting volunteering, and advocating on the sector’s behalf.
Our support empowers the community groups and volunteers in Somerset to transform people’s lives and enhance their health and happiness.
These are our core activities
Whether we’re hosting training and networking events, providing 1:1 support to groups, publishing regular newsletters, or matching people with causes that matter to them, we work to deliver them every day.
No matter what role we play, from marketing to finance, community development to operations, we are all part of one team that shares the same values and goals.
Facilitate community development
We provide free practical support for people and not-for-profit organisations to nurture their skills and help build community resilience. We bring people together to make connections, share what they do and support one another.
Support for groups
We offer a range of advice and guidance to groups, empowering them with the skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver effective and sustainable services.
The Spark iT team are providing support and connections across our local communities, working alongside NHS teams in delivering our strategic digital roadmap plans for digital inclusion.
Champion social action
We encourage social action by supporting local people to volunteer and get involved in their communities.

Lead on voice and influence
We speak as the trusted voice of the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise sector. We help ensure it is heard and gets the resources it needs. As an ‘honest broker’ for the sector, we are proud to advocate on its behalf.
Spark Somerset work hard to strengthen the community infrastructure in Somerset. The ever-growing demand for a more holistic community offer means that strengthening this infrastructure is important - and advocating for this cultural shift to connect people to community rather than clinical services has really taken shape with their hard work.
Our impact
The past 12 months has, once more, been a year of significant change in our communities and the wider VCFSE sector – and we are proud to support the charities making a big difference in Somerset. Our team has been constantly adapting our organisation and ways of working to increase our resilience, learning and overall impact.
