Support for unpaid carers
Our team helps people and groups to develop their skills and boost community resilience. We listen to local needs and work together to find solutions.
An example of this is our work in partnership with Somerset Carers, who, alongside healthcare providers, local services, and other organisations, provide tailored support to unpaid carers in Somerset. This includes a network of peer groups where attendees can find friendship, support, information, and advice. These groups are led by volunteers, many of whom are carers themselves or have been in the past.
How we help
Our Carers Support Group Development Lead is here to support the volunteers to run the groups effectively and sustainably, by offering guidance on topics such as governance, funding and training and recruiting volunteers.
Some examples of our work include:
- We have helped secure funding for groups to offer activities such as cognitive and physical exercises for the person who is cared for, meaning attendees can come along without the stress and cost of finding alternative care
- Inviting guest speakers from other organisations and services to attend the groups and help raise awareness of the support on offer
- Facilitating an evening online support group for unpaid carers who cannot attend meetings that take place during the day
- Piloting Carer Connector training so that existing volunteers can identify carers and signpost them to support
Cath has been a great help in supporting me with the group and is always there when a question comes in that I can’t answer. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience and lots of contacts with other organisations so we are able to provide useful talks and helpful information to the group.

The group provides support and a safe place where a carer can rant or cry or share how they are feeling. It has given me a lovely group of friends and makes my ‘bad years’ worthwhile.
