Introduction to Youth Work

As part of our work with the Somerset Youth Work Alliance (SYWA), we are delighted to be able to offer free Introduction to Youth Work courses.

The course will be delivered by South Gloucestershire Playscheme, an accredited training provider specialising in Level 2 Award in Youth Work Principles and Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice courses. It is aimed at new youth workers and youth volunteers who haven’t yet undertaken a level 2 or 3 qualification, as well as those who volunteer with children and young people and want to find out if youth work is for them.

The course will cover:

  • the key purposes and principles of youth work
  • legislation and policies
  • the skills and qualities a youth worker will need
  • how to communicate with young people and adolescent development

There won’t be any exams or coursework – just group discussions, minimal writing and practical activities!

The course will take place in Taunton and be delivered over two, 4.5 hour hour sessions on Wednesday 18 & 25 September from 10am to 3pm. Attendees will be required to attend both sessions.

Places are free to members of the SWYA. To book yours, please download and complete the application form and email it to training@sgplayscheme.co.uk.

If you are interested in this introductory course, but are not currently working in a youth work setting and would like to start volunteering or working with young people, please get in touch Tash Scully, Somerset Youth Work Alliance facilitator, via this form.

Thank you to Somerset Community Foundation who are also funding this course.
